Every Day AI – Volume #1 – Tacos and Technology

There is no better way to start an “Every Day AI” blog than a quick run to the border… Are you aware that your Taco Bell Mexican Pizza will now be served up with a heaping side of AI-driven services? That’s right!

According to The Wall Street Journal, Yum Brands, owner of Taco Bell, Pizza Hut, KFC and more, is working with Nvidia on AI-powered voice-ordering at the drive-through lane. The goal is to boost sales by taking orders digitally instead of via human person. According to Yum Brands Chief Digital and Technology Officer, Joe Park, Taco Bell is using the technology to “upsell, personalize and entice eaters through notifications,” and improve order accuracy.

Taco Bell plans to eventually capture 100% of all orders through digital channels instead of through humans. Park says in-restaurant workers will transition to more customer service.

Yum Brands is building the service “in-house” because they want to own the intellectual property. Yum has 2,000 technologists building related applications.

Tacos and technology… The future classic combo? I’m curious if not order related, what other “customer service” is available at Taco Bell? Bathroom attendant? And perhaps “bean-related energy” will help fill the energy gap heavy AI processing requires?

“Every Day AI” is a blog sharing observations of the use of artificial intelligence and other modern technology in day-to-day situations. Thoughtful commentary and open questions sometimes included.
